Toshiba laptops: The Laptop Security Problem

Toshiba laptops: The Laptop Security Problem

The Laptop Security Problem

A rash of news items has brought the laptop security issue to widespread public attention:

  • In October 2002 an Air Force sergeant was charged with the theft of two laptop computers taken from the military command center that oversees U.S. military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The laptops were missing for nearly two weeks before they were recovered, but according to military sources, no sensitive information was taken (4).
  • In a report released in August 2002, five agencies under Justice Department jurisdiction reported 400 missing laptop computers. The classification level of 218 of the missing laptops was unknown, and the report noted, “It is possible that the missing laptop computers would have been used to process and store national security or sensitive law enforcement information that, if divulged, could harm the public (5).”
  • In June 2002 a laptop computer and stamps used to grant access to the United States were stolen from an Immigration and Naturalization Service office (6).
  • In March 2002 a laptop computer belonging to the Auditor General of Nova Scotia was stolen from his home, raising concerns about a security breach affecting auditing officesacross Canada (7).
  • In July 2001 the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that 184 laptops had been lost or stolen. At least one and possibly as many as four contained classified information (8).
  • In April 2001 the British Defense Ministry reported 205 laptops missing since 1997, most of which contained classified material (9).
  • In September 2000 three laptop computers and a handheld device were stolen from a Democratic National Committee office (10).
  • Also in September 2000, the laptop of Qualcomm’s CEO, Irwin Jacobs, was stolen from a conference room in which he had just given a presentation. Jacobs told participants that the computer contained proprietary information that could be valuable to foreign governments (11).
  • In three separate incidents between March and May 2000, British intelligence and military agents lost laptops that were reported to contain state secrets. In the first, an intelligence officer for MI6 mislaid a laptop, which was recovered by police two weeks later. In the second, a laptop containing classified material on Northern Ireland was stolen from an MI5 security officer. In the third, a naval officer’s laptop, containing details on a fighter plane being jointly developed by Britain and the United States, was stolen and later recovered by a British tabloid (12, 13).
  • In February 2000 a laptop computer with “highly classified” information disappeared from
the U.S. State Department (14). The laptop was not password protected and the data on it were not encrypted. It was reported to contain several thousand pages of highly classified documents. In May 2000 two more laptops were reported missing from the U.S. State Department (15).

How to take apart and repair Toshiba laptops

The following laptop step-by-step disassembly manuals I have created myself. You can use them if you have a Toshiba laptop and want to repair or upgrade it yourself. You shouldn’t disassemble your laptop if you have no experience with computers because you can easily damage it. Also, you shouldn’t open it if the laptop is still under warranty. I’m still developing new laptop teardown guides and my goal is to add new guides every week for new models of Toshiba laptops.

Hard drive failure symptoms
A few days ago I had to repair a notebook with symptoms that didn’t look like a hard drive failure at all. But the problem was fixed after I replace the hard drive.

It was Toshiba Tecra M11-S3420 notebook with the following problem.
When I press on the power button, the laptop starts up as usual and a red Toshiba logo appears on the screen. After a moment the logo disappears and the screen turns black without any faint image and flashing cursor. The blue light around the power button stays on and fans continue to spin normal but nothing appears on the screen. I noticed that the hard drive LED blinks green on the startup and after that shows no activity at all. After a closer inspection I noticed that the screen is not completely black (like dead black), it didn’t have any image on it but it had a very faint backlight (I would say about 3-5% of normal brightness). I was able to see that there is some backlight after I pressed on the lid close switch and the screen turned to completely black.

Here are my troubleshooting steps that I went through to find the problem.
First of all, I replaced the memory module and didn’t get any changes. Removed the wireless card, still had the same problem.
After that I removed the hard drive and started the computer. This time I got something. The notebook successfully passed the Toshiba screen and started looking for a boot device. I got some activity on the screen. To make sure that the notebook itself works fine, I booted it from Knoppix (live Linux CD) and successfully loaded the Linux operating system to the desktop. So, that’s the hard drive problem!
I installed the hard drive back in the laptop and tried to boot it again. The same failure occurred again; I got a black screen with a very faint backlight and no hard drive activity at all. I tested the hard drive with Hitachi DFT test and failed an advanced test. The problem is detected!
Finally I installed a new hard drive, reimaged the drive with a recovery DVD and got the laptop back up and running.

Maintenance and Cleaning of Toshiba Laptops

Laptopas are very sensitive device and need more care than the desktops computers. Cleaning your Toshiba Satellite M45 hardware will help your laptop run more smoothly and minimize wear and tear on your system. Dust, pet hair, dander, food crumbs and residue from liquids such as coffee and soda find their way into your computer and settle onto internal components and into your keyboard. This dust and residue also builds up on your display screen and clogs vents. To keep your laptop in excellent working order, it is recommended that you regularly perform routine cleaning tasks outlined in this guide.

1: Cleaning Internal Fans
Clean internal fans once a year to prevent damage to the CPU’s circuitry. If your fans are not fully operational you’re the fine silicone circuits can melt in your CPU.
To clean these fans inside your laptop:
1. Gather the following supplies: #1 screwdriver (found in a small screwdriver set), cotton swabs, and isopropyl alcohol.
2. Shut down and unplug your laptop.
3. With the lid closed, turn your laptop upside down. Push the two tabs towards the outside edges of your laptop (see picture). Remove the long rectangular-shaped plastic battery cover
underneath your laptop near the screen hinge. While tabs are pulled, slide the plastic battery cover away from the hinge and pull it off. Unhook and remove the battery.
4. Remove 14 screws located around the base of your laptop. These screws are set down inside holes on the backing.
5. Then, remove the 3 screws from the component panels. (Be sure to store these small screws safely.) Pull the backing off carefully.
6. Remove small screws holding fans in place with the screwdriver.
7. Use several cotton swabs moistened with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust thoroughly from both fans.
8. Place fans back in place and twist screws back in with screwdriver.

2: Washing Down Heat Sinks
The Toshiba Satellite M45 has two heat sinks. Cleaning dust accumulation on your heat sinks once a year will improve the heat transfer process, keeping your laptop cooler.
1. If the battery is not removed and backing is still attached, follow steps 1 to 3 from Section 1: Cleaning Internal Fans.
2. Remove the heat sink attached to the CPU. Clean it with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Cleansers other than isopropyl alcohol may leave a residue.
3. If your CPU is attached to the heat sink, the thermal grease might have dried out. Thermal grease made of silicone or metal based grease is applied to the base of heat sinks to help
conduct heat from the microprocessor and the heat sink. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the CPU and heat sink apart. Place the CPU back into the socket on the motherboard.

4. Remove old thermal grease from the heat sink bottom using cotton swabs moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Then, apply a new layer of thermal grease.
5. Place clean heat sink on top of chip. Repeat steps 1 to 3 with second heat sink.
3: Blowing Vents and Ports
There are two vents on the bottom of your laptop and one on the left hand side which allow air to enter the internal cooling system. Several physical network ports located on the sides of your laptop allow cables to connect to computers, routers, modems and other peripheral devices. Cleaning vents on your Toshiba Satellite M45 every six months helps your laptop’s cooling system work efficiently. Also, cleaning its ports every six months helps external
devices run properly.
1. If battery is not removed and backing is still attached, follow steps 1 to 3 from section 1: Cleaning Internal Fans.
2. While plastic backing is still removed from your laptop, blow both sides of vents with compressed air. Make sure the surface area you are working on is clean so debris does not blow into your ports. Keep air can upright to prevent liquid from accidentally leaking out of can. This, or any, liquid can damage components inside your laptop.
3. Use tweezers to remove any debris from your ports. Then blow compressed air into ports.
Ports include:
§ Right side: two USB and one i.link IEEE-1394
§ Back side: RJ11, RJ45, and S-Video
Do Not Use Your Laptop on Soft Surfaces. If you use your laptop in bed place your laptop on
a hard surface. The soft mattress, pillows and sheets will prevent heat from escaping out of the
sides and bottom of your machine. Overheating can cause permanent damage to the silicon chips in your computer.
Preventive Maintenance and Cleaning Toshiba Satellite M45 5
§ Left side: Parallel port, PCMCIA CardBus.
§ Front: Bridge media Adapter slot (memory stick)
4: Maintaining the Keyboard
Cleaning your Toshiba Satellite M45 keyboard weekly will reduce debris buildup and extend the life of your keyboard.
1. Turn off computer.
2. Turn laptop upside down and gently tap edge of case.
3. Using a keyboard brush with long fibers (often found at office supply stores), pass brush gently across the tops of keys, pushing dust and debris over the edge of your laptop.
4. Hold brush in vertical position. Pull brush between rows of keys from left to right, pushing dust and debris out from between keys and over the edge of your laptop.
5. Wipe tops of keys gently with moist cloth. Do not spray liquid directly on keys.

5: Wiping the Display
The technology of your LCD screen is extremely delicate. Cleaning your laptop display takes little effort, however, if done incorrectly can cause great damage. Wipe your display weekly.
1. Moisten a lint-free cloth with a spray bottle filled with distilled water. Do not spray liquid directly on screen.
Important: Tap water is filled with minerals that can streak your screen. If distilled water is not solvent enough to clean your screen, mix a solution of half distilled water and half vinegar. Do
not use solutions containing Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride on your LCD screen.
2. Wipe display in a repetitive motion either top to bottom or side to side.

Toshiba Tecra A11

Toshiba Tecra A11

This mainstream business system has plenty of power and business features
Small business owners and entrepreneurs need to scrimp and save any way they can, which is why systems such as the Toshiba Tecra A11 represent a real deal. For $879, users get a fairly powerful system, a large 15.6-inch display, and security and IT features that would otherwise be too costly for a start-up.
While the A11 comes preinstalled with Windows XP Professional, Toshiba packages Windows 7 Professional with the system, which we installed prior to running our benchmark tests.
Design
Although business notebooks aren’t known for their flair, more consideration is given now to their looks. The A11’s matte black lid is dimpled with a stylish pattern that doesn’t show fingerprints, and it continues on the deck; the bezel is also a matte black plastic, but lacks the design. Overall, it’s a much understated look that will no doubt appeal to business users, but it lacks the full panache of the HP ProBook series, which has a more elegant brushed aluminum lid. Above the keyboard are buttons for launching Toshiba’s Eco Utility, outputting the screen to a projector or larger display, and volume controls. These are handy to have, but we think they would be better put to use if they offered quick access to, say, PowerPoint or some other business-centric function.
Heat
The large chassis of the A11 kept the system relatively cool while streaming a Hulu video at full screen. After 15 minutes, the touchpad was 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the space between the G and H keys reached 95 degrees, and the middle of the underside was 97 degrees. Still, this system was working hard: the underside by the exhaust vent measured 105 degrees.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The A11’s deck is large enough to comfortably fit a full keyboard and number pad. The black matte lids are of the traditional variety, had a nice textured surface, and responded well when typing. We were up to our usual speed in no time.
The 3 x 1.6-inch touchpad is comfortably large, and its surface let us move around with ease. Below, the two mouse buttons (separated by a fingerprint reader) are made of a shiny metallic plastic, which makes them really stand out on the all-black deck. Despite picking up fingerprints, the buttons were large and responsive when pressed.

Display and Audio
The 15.6-inch display on the A11 has a resolution of 1366 x 768; if the screen were any larger, pixels would start to look a little too large, but here, it’s good for having two windows open side by side. The screen has a glossy finish, which is unusual for a business notebook; this makes it more reflective than we’d like. Horizontal viewing angles were wide enough so that two people could sit on either side of the screen, but vertical viewing angles were much more limited; we found that the ideal position was 10 to 15 degrees past vertical.
The stereo speakers, mounted on the left and right front of the system, were very loud for a business notebook. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to run” blared out as if we were at the Stone Pony ourselves, but lower tones were sadly lacking, drowned out by treble notes that became harsh as we cranked the volume to its max.

Durability and Security
Chances are, a notebook such as the A11 will see a lot of use in its lifetime, which is why Toshiba outfitted the machine with what it calls Easy Guard Technology: hardware and software features designed to increase its longevity. This includes a 3D accelerometer that parks the hard drive in the event the notebook is jarred, and shock absorbers that further protect the hard drive and other components such as the LCD panel.
On the security front, the A11 includes the aforementioned fingerprint reader between the mouse buttons, Infineon Trusted Platform Module Software (which encrypts the hard drive), and Toshiba’s Secure Digital Token Utility, which lets consumers use an SD Card as a key to access the notebook.

Sleep and Music

Toshiba always strives for innovation and development of products for its customers easiness. Now Toshiba technology can take you such places where you never thought or imagined. But when the matter is of doing enjoyment from your music library, so ear buds and headphones can take you a considerable distance. Due to this reason Toshiba has introduced Sleep-and-Music on their Satellite ® A660 and M640 laptops which lets you scale up songs and other sounds by tapping in to your laptop speakers –even when your PC is asleep or is off. You can have fun, save your time and can get conserving power and that is the purpose of Toshiba innovation for you.
Get more musical mileage:
Sleep-and- music provides enjoyment to you at scaled up sound wherever you and your laptop is whether on vacations, in room, on terrace or outside of the house. You just hook into the microphone jack on your Toshiba laptop. Even you have no need to power up your PC.
No need to have headphones and listen what you want:
When the matter comes to expensive listening, Sleep-and –Music gives further side to instead of ear buds and headphones. You just need to plug in your MP3 player and you can have your whole music library wit first-class sound system on your Toshiba laptop.

Why Toshiba should be first on your list

The world’s most popular Notebook.
Toshiba developed the world’s first industry standard Notebook computer in 1985, and they’ve led the way ever since. In fact, our Notebooks are now the most popular in theworld, with over 40 million sold – more than any other brand.
Notebooks that lead the way.
We pioneered many technologies that are now industry standards (including ever smaller hard
disk drives, better and better screens, and more and more efficient batteries). You’ll find some
cool new technologies in this brochure, including fingerprint scanners, advanced screens, great sound systems and useful software.
Power stations. Space craft. Robots. Notebooks. TVs. All in a day’s work.
Toshiba build power generation systems, advanced medical scanners, satellites, robots and more. Toshiba also make countless electronic components - screens, silicon chips, memory and so on. There’s more to Toshiba than Notebooks, and that’s why there’s more to our Notebooks.
Reliability that’s built in.
At Toshiba, we believe that reliability is the single most important feature a Notebook can have. So we aim to build it in (because it’s not something that can be bolted-on). The result? Toshibas Notebooks have a class-leading reputation for reliability.

Corporate Milestones and History
Toshiba is ranked as one of the top manufacturers that garnered one of the top 20 market shares in the industry. This is mainly due to Toshiba’s total commitment to deliver a higher quality of life to the consumers of the world through its various innovative products and services. This commitment to quality has been evident through the years since the early days of Toshiba’s forerunner companies, to the formal creation of Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd from where the term Toshiba was derived.

1875 to 1938
Toshiba is a result of a merger between two industry giants in their respective fields. The first company is Tanaka Seizo-sho (or Tanaka Engineering Works), the manufacturer of Japan’s first telegraphic equipment. The company named after founder Hisashige Tanaka was later changed to Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Shibaura Engineering Works) which was Japan’s largest manufacturer of heavy electrical devices during those periods. The company produced Japan’s first radio receivers and completed Japan’s first 150 kW broadcast transmitter for NHK.
The second forerunner company is Hakenetsu-sha & Co. Ltd, the firs plant of its kind in Japan that manufacturers incandescent lamps. When the company diversified to consumer products, manufacturing Japan’s first electric fans and induction motors, it was renamed Tokyo Denki or the Tokyo Electric Co. The company also invented the “double coil electric bulb” and started the development and manufacture of cathode ray tubes.

1939 to 1950
In 1939, the two companies merged to form Tokyo Shibaura Denki or Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd as a manufacturer of integrated electrical equipments. Together, they built and manufactured Japan’s first fluorescent lamps in 1940 and completed Japan’s first radars in 1942.

1951 to 1975
This period brought a lot of “firsts” for the corporation. Toshiba completed Japan’s first TV broadcast transmitters and microwave relay systems for television in 1952. In 1954, Toshiba developed the TAC digital computer, which will be the forerunner in Toshiba’s involvement in the personal computer industry. The company later brought entertainment to a new level with the introduction of Japan’s first transistorized televisions. In 1970, the company introduced the world’s first color video phone and the world’s first expanded IC color TV the year later. In 1975, the company celebrated its first 100 years.

1976 to 1990
Toshiba release the first Japanese word processor in 1978, the same year that the corporation formally adapted Toshiba Corporation as its official name. The company once again introduced several innovative products in different fields including the introduction of the world’s first laptop personal computers in 1985 that brought the computing world into a new age.

1991 to 2000
In 1995, Toshiba introduced the sub-notebook personal computers and developed the DVD format high-density optical disk. The format soon became standardized and Toshiba released the first of its DVD-ROM Optical storage devices.

2001 to 2008
Toshiba commercialized the first HDD and DVD video recorders fro an excellent multimedia experience for home, business and personal users. In collaboration with SanDisk, Toshiba developed the 8-gigabit flash memory chip. Sales in 2007 skyrocketed to a cumulative number of 60 million notebook PCs. In 2008, Toshiba conceded and dropped its HD DVD format in favor of the Blu-ray Disc devices and formalizes intentions to release stand-alone players as well as Blu-ray drives for PCs and notebooks bringing multimedia experience to a new level.

2009 and Beyond
In January of 2009, Toshiba acquired the HDD business of Fujitsu and beefed up its computer peripherals business. The company continues to strive to design and develop new and innovative products and technologies in the quest of making people’s lives more convenient and enjoyable.
